Detailed description of Texas National Golf Club, CLOSED 2014

Texas National Golf Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Willis, Texas.

Texas National Golf Club opened for play in 1976. The course was designed by Jack Miller.

The terrain around Willis is loaded with forests of dogwood, holly, and pine trees, creating the perfect environment for an Augusta National imitation. Texas National Golf Club, one of the most unusual courses in the Houston area and one of the closest comparisons to the Masters layout you'll find in Texas.

Miller's secluded layout features water on 12 holes, and the elevation changes tare reminiscent of the Hill Country. Texas National's signature hole is No. 2, a 222-yard par 3 that plays over a pond. Possibly the most attractive element about the layout is that there are no architectural “gimmicksâ€, just 6800 yards of pure challenge with great rewards for good shots.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6806 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4964 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 7, a par-5 that plays to 589 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 14, a par-3 that plays to 170 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, a 589 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Texas National is # 14, a 170 yard par-3.

The course closed December 2014 and has not reopened. Reportedly (Summer 2015) a few members of the Texas National community were seeking investors and assistance in restoring the golf course, in efforts to prevent developers from building homes on a potential economic enhancement for the county.

Course was in OK shape considering it's still winter. No winter rye grass in fairways or greens. Greens were bare so very quick a little bumby. However it's a nice layout with #17 one of the toughest par 3s you'll ever play. Also quiet with very few houses on the course and a very fair price. I'll be back.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Tucked among the pines well north of the Houston area, Texas National is an eye-pleaser, nicely laid out and routed, with fast, smooth greens. Be sure to hit that practice green to get used to the speed; they're probably faster than most in the Houston area. The length seems short on the scorecard, but it plays as long as you could ever want, even from the whites. The scenic pines, attractive layout, and fast greens are probably where most natural inclincations to compare Texas National to another well-known National over in Georgia should end. Fairways were too "native" and indistinguishable from the rough; bunkers, while strategically placed, seemed like an afterthought from a maintenance standpoint; and, while the round clocked in at right around 4.5 hours, we were a twosome behind a threesome behind God knows what, and there was no marshal in sight. Hopefully that's an anomaly. This is the type of course I would play more often if I was in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip for.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again
